Should Transformers Swear?

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

I am not a prude. Farthest thing from it. I live a pretty open life in front of my kids. They’ve heard me swear, they know that I drink, they get a pretty well rounded view of the adult world. None of that plays into this.

Last night, Dylan and I went out to see Transformers 2. We’ve both been psyched for it since the first one ended and everyone knew there would be a follow up. I grew up with Transformers and really enjoyed the first movie. Heck, I even judged a contest in Second Life when the first movie came out around fan made transformers. I’m also a big Michael Bay fan and always have been.

But, what pissed me off about this movie was the amount of swearing in it.

I’ve got no problem with the occasional bad word in a fire fight or the height of the action, but by the end of the movie it felt like ever chance the filmmakers got they dropped a word in there. Sure, no f-bombs were dropped and it was mostly harmless words that I use on a daily basis, but do we need toys that our kids play with to be swearing? There are two characters in film that are funny, but they felt almost like a street slang Jar Jar Binks more then a transformer and as a fan of the brand and a Dad it just upset me.

I debated if I should post this or not, but I couldn’t ignore it. The movie was ruined for me because of this and honestly I question if I will see the third one that you can be sure is coming. If I go to a Kevin Smith movie (and I’m a HUGE fan of his work) then I expect an endless stream of dick and fart jokes, but when I go to Transformers I’m expecting lots of robots, action and slow motion shots of Megan Fox running. *wicked grin*

The fact that on the way home as we talked about the movie, the two scenes that Dylan called out were a mini robot humping Megan’s leg and the “big balls” the Transformer had on top of the Pyramid and you get where I’m coming from. I’d rather him talking about the big action scene in the forest or all the cool explosions.

The movie was too long anyways and when you add in this I couldn’t wait for it to be done so I could leave. It bugged me that bad. Anyone else have a similar reaction or am I just getting old and not knowing it?
