Safely in Abu Dhabi

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Just arrived in Abu Dhabi from New York. Still trying to get over the fact that I missed an entire day traveling over here. Left at 9:45 pm New York Time on Monday and arrived Tuesday night 7:45 pm Abu Dhabi time.

Despite the fact that I feel like starting my day rather than finishing it (Abu Dhabi is 9 hours ahead of NY), I’m settle in with room service and channel surfing to see what people from this region of the world, United Emirates, watch for sports every night. Here were my choices:

  • Six different European Soccer matches
  • Rugby
  • Horse Racing
  • Men’s Tennis
  • Darts
  • Team Handball

In other words, I thought I was watching “Old School” ESPN, the only thing missing was arm wrestling!

Abu Dhabi is an interesting place, located only 90 minutes by car from Dubai, it’s home to the Sheikh Zayed mosque, the largest in the United Arab Emirates – and the sixth largest in the world. It also houses the world’s largest carpet, which measures 60,500 square feet, and weighs 51.8 tons!

Tomorrow, we start introducing the Fairmont Hotels & Resorts “RU Ready?” youth athletic/fitness program and how the Trick It Out Sports concept will work in the Middle East through a series of press interviews.

  1. Shape Magazine – Middle East bureau, to discuss best workouts for Moms to do with their families, and why fitness does not have to stop while you’re on vacation or a business trip.
  2. Sports 360 – a newly launched sports newspaper to discuss the growing epidemic of health issues due to the increasing number of overweight kids.
  3. Emirates 24, an online portal of the former Emirates Business 24/7, will have Arts & Life Editor, Bindu Rai, to ask about how young Fairmont Hotel guests can take not only memories home but also useful athletic & fitness performance tips.

Stay tuned for more updates from my trip.

How Do Kids Play Worldwide?

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

Trick It Out Sports begins a two week journey with Fairmont Hotels & Resorts “RU Ready?” Program, to the Middle East (Abu Dhabi & Dubai), South Africa (Durban), and Cairo to discover, explore, and learn how kids play, compete, and creatively engage in sports.

We’ll seek to the answers to many questions that’ll provide us a better understanding on how kids engage in sports, and what they seek from their sports experience.

Questions such as ….

  • How popular are Action Sports in other parts of the world?
  • What Action Sports do they find appealing?
  • What competitive games do they play that we don’t in the United States?
  • Do kids train differently in different countries?
  • How important are sports and an active lifestyle to kids in other countries?
  • How much free play is part of their lives?
  • What’s their favorite sport to play?

Related to this topic, I wanted to share this interview I did with adventure sport icon Shaun White before the last Winter Olympics.

These are just some of the many questions we will ask and seek the answers to over the next two weeks through this blog, ScottLancasterOnSports.com, or on our twitter account – @trickitout.

Follow our adventures every day for the next 16 days as we reach out to learn & Trick It Out through the universal language of sports.

Do you have any questions you would like asked? Please let us know and we’ll be sure to ask and seek the answers to your questions.

The Dark Days of Sports

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

I am a huge sports fan. I always have been.

I grew up playing them and then due to a stupid doctor, I was scared out of playing them in high school. But, all that aside I can plop down on the couch and pretty much watch any sporting event.

Dylan and a BIG Patriot FanRight now though is what I refer to as “the dark days of sports.”

While I love going to a baseball game and watching it live, I just can’t watch a game on television. Not unless it is October and it is the playoffs. THEN I can watch baseball on TV. I find it boring and I’d almost rather watch golf. Which by the way is the one sport that I have zero interest in. I’ve tried playing it and watching it and neither do anything for me.

For me, once the NHL and NBA playoffs are over I get bored with sports. The occasional tennis match will grab my attention and this year we thankfully had the World Cup to cheer for. But, right now there is nothing for me.

I know we only have a few weeks left until the NFL starts back up. More than any other sport I’m a die hard football fan. I’ve rooted for the Miami Dolphins my entire life (which is loads of “fun” when you grow up in New England) and this year they finally look like they have a better then usual chance of doing something good. Go Fins!!

Thankfully I’m blessed with a wife who is also a football fan (she roots for the Baltimore Ravens) and Sunday in our house is nothing but football. Opening day we always go over the top and cook a ton of tailgating food to celebrate. I don’t know what is on the menu yet this year but it is always yummy and bad for you. As good tailgating should be.

Am I the only one who gets down in the dumps missing sports this time of year? I’m curious.

Father’s Day Gifts, Vol. 1

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Dad’s aren’t tough to buy gifts for, right? A tie, a Home Depot gift card, and a new barbecue utensil is all you need, right?

What about the Digital Dads?

While they spend plenty of time unplugged, there are plenty of Dads who enjoy their gaming or sports online, whether it be fighting alongside comrades from around the world, picking their fantasy league lineups, or following their favorite sports teams. With that in mind, there’s plenty of options for the Gaming Digital Dad.

  • Is Dad relying on ESPN or some other network to broadcast his favorite baseball team? Sign him up for MLB Extra Innings. It’ll get you every non-nationally televised game, many in HD, all the way through October. Also available: MLB.tv. Dad can watch any of those same games right online.
  • Does Dad have an iPhone? (No? Get him one! Then…) Steal it and download some great apps for him. Or load it up with some of his favorite tunes. He’ll appreciate that you managed to find all those old songs you don’t like. While you’re at it, get him some nice headphones so Mom doesn’t have to listen to them either.
  • Whenever you go to the movies, do you lose Dad in the arcade? The Playstation3 doubles as a Blu-Ray player. Not a bad excuse to upgrade from the old school DVD player and that ancient, dusty PS2. Or, get him a Nintendo Wii and politely mention all the old school games available through the Virtual Console.
  • Combine a couple of these music and video game ideas and introduce him to the wonderful world of Guitar Hero. You pick the platform, Dad picks the tunes. Fair trade.

Whatever you end up getting for your Gaming Digital Dad, you know he’ll appreciate it… until you wipe the floor with him on Expert mode. Take it easy on the old man, will ya?

The shoe cables a repent reward near the visible.
