Coleman® Outdoor Portable Oven/Stove

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

I grew up spending at least a week camping every summer with my family. We’d pack up the station wagon, drive to a national park or campground and set up camp for the week. Just thinking back about these times as I write this makes me smile.

Camping is something I still have a love for. It doesn’t matter if it is out of my backback or the back of my car, I love it both ways. We try to get away at least one week every summer, but lately we have to settle for a long weekend.

One brand that I grew up loving and still use to this day is Coleman.

I can remember pumping up the old liquid fuel stove and have cooked tons of meals over my two burner propane. They are one of the few brands that I love and trust and that have never let me down over the years.

Recently, I heard about their new Outdoor Portable Oven/Stove. I remember reading about it and thinking that it was either genius or insane.

Coleman noticed me wondering this and asked if I’d like to try one out. How could I say no to that? They sent me one and this past weekend Emily and I gave it a whirl on the deck to try making brownies.

The top of the oven is your typical Coleman two burner stove. It works great, just like they always have.

My only complaint is that I’m not a big fan of the cover and the sides. They are made out of rather thin metal and I miss the various notches on the connections with the side to have the back up straight or leaned back more. There is only one hinge and it is actually leaned back more than I’d like to protect from the wind.

The oven heats up quickly which is a plus. But, the downside is because it isn’t exactly temperature controlled you are going to have to fiddle around a bit to get it to the exact temperature you like. If all you’ve ever cooked with is an oven at home and never over an open fire, you are going to have a lot of trial and error ahead of you.

You also have to keep in mind that there is not a ton of space in the oven. You could easily bake a cobbler, pie or small pizza in there though so there is plenty of room for the type of things you might use it for in the outdoors. I just want people to realize they won’t be roasting a chicken or anything of that size in it.

Our brownies burnt a bit around the edges as the oven got hotter than we expected and it was a few minutes before we noticed. But, all in all it worked great and the only problem with making them in the oven outdoors instead of inside is that our house didn’t get filled with the wonderful smell. Then again, I’m betting our neighbors loved the smell wafting through the neighborhood.

All in all this is a pretty cool product. With the stove not being as solid as their regular ones are, I’m not sure this product is worth the price tag, but I have a feeling they won’t have any problem selling plenty of them for the convenience factor alone.

The thought of making fresh biscuits and desserts in it while car camping is definitely something I’m noodling on. The fact that you can also buy a bag for it that holds your propane tanks and protects it is a nice feature as well. It is compact enough that families and RVers alike will be able to find space for it.

I’ll always prefer to cook over an open fire because I grew up doing so and know what I’m doing. But, if you want an oven that you can take with you instead of packing the kitchen sink, than this might be for you.

Make sure to get outside this summer and enjoy the great outdoors!

Disclosure: Coleman sent me the oven & bag so that I could review it. All thoughts are my own.

Act of Valor

Friday, February 24th, 2012

There are few things you need to know about me before reading this review because I’m completely biased.

I love our military. Any man or woman who puts on a uniform and puts their life on the line to help protect my freedom has my undying respect. It is why I support organizations like Fisher House and more recently the Green Beret Foundation.

I’m also a huge fan of special forces stories, books, games and movies. I grew up reading Tom Clancy novels like they were candy and while I suck at multiplayer games, I love first person shooters that are out these days.

All that being said, I just returned from seeing Act of Valor and this is a movie you should go see.

Hollywood usually screws up balls to the wall action movies like this, but from start to finish this is full of action and awesomeness that you want to see.

Sure, there are huge plot holes from magic intel that they never really address, but I’m ok with that. I’m not there to question a perfect plot because when you go see a movie like this you know what you are in for and it isn’t anything that is going to get nominated for an Oscar.

When I first heard about a movie being made using real Navy Seals I was a little worried because it sounded like a cheap Hollywood gimmick.

But, from the opening shot of the movie it is clear that the creators of this movie have the utmost respect for the military and while it makes for great headlines, these guys did a great job with the film. It is not always an easy movie to watch and while voice overs are usually a sure sign of crap, they are beautifully done in this film and I hope to find the text of it somewhere online so that I can read it as a whole.

For the tech geeks like me out there, you should know that this movie was shot using HDSLR cameras. Read this article if you want to know more about it. Trust me, that it does not distract from the story in any way and in fact I think it adds a certain grittiness to it.

If I have any complaint about the movie it was that there was too many POV first person shooter type of shots. The opening scene almost made me motion sick from the jump cuts and POV shots. Sure, they were playing off the familiar view we have while playing video games, but there was a bit too much for my tastes.

I also want to say that this was the first R movie I have ever let my son see.

I checked the IMDB Parental Guide before making the decision to take him. As a dad let me be point blank with you that if you let your kid play games like Call of Duty, Battlefield 3 or anything like that, then this movie contains nothing they haven’t already seen. Plus, it gave us a lot to talk about after the movie since it has some hard and valuable lessons on what it means to be a responsible man and I’m glad I took him.

It is bloody, violent and full of appropriate cursing. I say appropriate because when people are shooting at you it makes anything appropriate.

This is a guys movie. The audience applauded at the end and rightfully so. You should take a guys night out and hit this movie. Support the men who made this piece of awesome fun cinema.

Thank you again to every single soldier both active duty and retired. I can never thank you enough for all that you have done and will do.

Show some support by seeing this movie. I give it an ass kicking A.

Review: Phineas & Ferb Live

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

A while back, after visiting Disney World with my son, I wrote that Disney hadn’t lost it’s magic. Nothing has happened since to change my stance, but a while ago it was solidly reinforced.  We took Paul to see “Phineas and Ferb: the Best Live Tour Ever”.  He had no idea what he was in for.  We simply told him we had a surprise for him, and off we went.

If you’re not familiar with Phineas and Ferb, take the time to check it out.  Two brothers, both smart in a gifted way, making the most of their 104 days of Summer vacation by applying their intelligence to any number of adventures.  The show doesn’t pander to kids, nor does it talk down to them.  In fact, the writers seem to strive to smartly entertain kids just above their level, and to do it in a way that it encourages them to strive and grow in what they know and do.  The TV show is witty and somehow talks to kids of all ages.  As a parent I appreciate the writers have also taken care to include things that make the program interesting and funny for adults.  The show encourages kids to think and imagine, be creative, play with others, and often times, to do all this outside.  Also, what most likely goes unnoticed but I’m sure influences young viewers, is the brothers are actually step-brothers.  You wouldn’t necessarily know this up front, but it sets a neat tone for the show.  Related, Phineas and Ferb’s circle of friends is diverse:  male and female, multi-national, multi-racial, and spans a wide variety of interests and personality types.  The show clearly emphasizes things in common and diminishes the things we (adults) sadly allow to get in the way of relationships.

Back to the live show.  We went to see actors playing cartoon characters.  I wasn’t sure how Disney (or anyone) would pull this off, but as long as it worked for my son then as far as I’m concerned, it works.  It worked.  The program began with the cartoon characters on screen, then had them transition to actors in costume by having each character go down a slide.  The cartoon character begins sliding and an actor in costume enters the stage on a real slide.  As an adult, I thought the characters were a bit odd looking, but there was no room for confusion about who each character was.  The program told a story, consistent with the Summer vacation theme of the TV show, and revolved around storytelling through dialog and music.  A week later, we’re all still singing the songs and quoting various parts of the production.

After seeing the show my son told his classmates at school we took him to see “the real Phineas and Ferb.”  He wasn’t distracted by actors in costume and he’s still beaming about the show.  Disney, you’ve done it again.  The Magic Kingdom remains magical; very well done!  If the tour comes near you, take your kids and go.  They’ll enjoy it and so will you.

Details on the live tour are available at: http://disney.go.com/disneylive/phineas-and-ferb-on-tour/

It’s great to be a dad!

Kraft MilkBite Bars

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

We eat a lot of breakfast bars in our house.

The fact of the matter is that we are always busy and sometimes there isn’t enough time to make breakfast or dinner when we’ve got a lot going on so we keep a pantry stocked full of various protein and snack bars.

So when Kraft pitched me on trying these new things called MilkBite Bars, I figured why not?

Unlike most other bars on the market, these need to go in your refrigerator because they contain milk. This is a strike against them since this means I can’t throw one in my backpack as I run out to the airport or for my wife to keep in her purse if she gets stuck in meetings and has to skip lunch.

These bars are just hitting the market this week and are found in the dairy isle at your grocery store. I’ve only been able to find them in one location around me so far, but I assume they’ll be rolling out everywhere shortly.

I like that each MilkBite Bar combines real milk with whole grain granola and other ingredients like fruit or roasted nuts, while offering 30% of your daily recommended value of calcium. My kids already drink a lot of milk, so I’m not concerned about their calcium intake, but for others this could be a yummy way to make sure they are getting it.

Kraft sent me a box of the chocolate and strawberry varieties so that we could review them here and the family liked them both. We liked them enough that I bought some more recently and they are already gone. I’ve also seen them in penut butter and oatmeal raisin flavors. I’m not sure if there are more varieties or not.

Coming five to a box, they are not the cheapest snack in the world, but they are a fairly healthy alternative to other things your kids could be snacking on. Thinking more about it they are cheaper than the protein bars I usually buy.

Disclosure: Kraft sent me two free boxes and a mini lunch bag that my daughter has already started using to bring her lunch to school. She loves the color. :)

Reviewing the Nissan Quest

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

If you remember, last month just before the holidays I mentioned that I was taking part in a review of a Nissan Quest.

We had the car for the last two weeks of the year and I used it for pretty much of all of my driving during that time. We even used it to drive up to my parents house on Christmas day with the kids, dog and everything else so that we could fully give it a test drive.

It is a great minivan for sure. We forgot how much room you actually get in a car of this size. If you have kids and need a lot of room you can’t go wrong with a minivan. We had one for a number of years, but hadn’t driven one in almost 5 so it was nice to see that they’ve been updated.

My #HolidayQuest

I can’t compare the Nissan Quest to other minivans out in the market today because I have not driven any others, but besides a few points we liked it.

The Good

  • Having so much room feels great whenever you have to load up the kids and hit the road. They don’t it because they are not sitting on top of one another.
  • Having a DVD system with wireless headphones is great for long trips. We didn’t hear a peep from them the whole ride and we got to enjoy our music at the same time.
  • The automatic sliding doors on both sides are great when you have an armful of groceries.
  • I loved that when the back row of seats are down flat you can still get to the storage in the back. We put presents under there while our dog was safely laying on top.
  • It was winter so we couldn’t fully enjoy the dual sunroofs, but I love the idea of having this much natural light and fresh air at our fingertips.

The Not So Good

  • I don’t know what the designers were thinking, but putting the stick between the driver and all of the dash controls was not a smart idea. Blocking the driver from being able to get to the radio and climate controls makes zero sense.

My #HolidayQuest

  • My wife hated how big the side mirrors were. I hadn’t noticed them until she mentioned them, but they were crazy big for no real added benefit.

My #HolidayQuest

  • While I got my phone to connect via Bluetooth, I could never get the voice commands to work with it. This needs to be much more intuitive.

I was disappointed to find that the Nissan Quest does not include some features that I would expect to find standard on a vehicle of this type. The biggest being the lack of a navigation system. I was going to drive it to a meeting, but when I discovered it lacked this I parked it and took my own car instead. I would have also loved to see blind spot notification and better phone integration made standard safety features.

My #HolidayQuest

So overall it drove good, got great gas milage for a vehicle of it’s size and gave us more room than we were use to. But, the quality of the car as a whole left a lot to be desired. Again, I can’t say how it compares to other minivans as I’ve got nothing to compare it to, but I do know there are better options for family of four with a dog like I have.

Thank you Nissan for having me be part of the #HolidayQuest.
