OVO Comes to Boston – Want to Go?

Many of you probably don’t now that I have a love of the theater. I grew up on stage, have acted in numerous productions and spent even more time behind the scenes producing or stage managing plays and movies.

I love Shakespeare, have seen numerous performances of Rent and own more then one soundtrack from a musical.

I was late on jumping on the Cirque du Soleil bandwagon because I had never had a chance to see a show. That changed a couple of years ago when Steve Coulson and I checked out Love in Vegas and I was blown away. Since then, I’ve become a big fan and love that every show they do is completely unique and inspiring. When I heard that a new production called OVO was coming to Boston I got excited.

About OVO
OVO is a headlong rush into a colorful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non‐stop riot of energy and movement. The insects’ home is a world of biodiversity and beauty filled with noisy action and moments of quiet emotion.

When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives. It’s love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye – and the feeling is mutual.

The name OVO means “egg” in Portuguese. Graphically, OVO hides an insect in its name: The two “O” letter represent the eyes while the letter “V” forms the nose.

The cast of OVO comprises 54 performing artists from 16 countries and director Deborah Colker, a renowned choreographer, has integrated dance movements into many of the acts in the show.  It was cool (and a bit surprising) to read that Colker is the first female Director at Cirque du Soleil.

Want To Win Tickets?

Thanks to the official automobile sponsor of Cirque Du Soleil, Infiniti, you have the chance to win a pair of tickets to a special sneak preview performance of OVO.

At Infinit, the intention is to move people emotionally as well as physically so this partnership is a perfect match.

All you have to do to win a pair of tickets is tell us about an “inspired performance” that you have been part of or witnessed. That is a rather open topic, so please have fun with it!

Leave a comment telling us about it or write a post on your own site and link back here in the comments.

On Monday morning we’ll pick two winners who will each win a pair of tickets to the Wednesday, July 21, 2010 performance here in Boston. I’ll be going to the show as well so we’ll be sure to take some pictures to share here on the site with the winners.

Good luck!

Update: This contest is closed as of 11:00 am EST on Monday July 19, 2010

My husband and I were very honored to be part of an inspired performance this past January at our community theatre. Having been off the stage for a while, we were nervous to take to the stage again, but the material kept the momentum. We were chosen to play a husband and wife (tough, right?) – a couple who had a young child but were constantly arguing because the husband was always putting work first. Our characters had a full-out argument on stage, ending with my character basically telling her husband she couldn't do it any longer. Scene faded to black, and two other scenarios played out.

The last scene shows all characters from the three scenarios running amongst chaos and trying to figure out what the confusion was about town. The announcer comes on and tells the audience that two planes have just crashed into the twin towers. Our characters, now in complete disbelief, explained to the audience why they hadn't made it to their destination that day. In our case, it was because my character had convinced my workaholic husband to join me in taking our daughter to school for her first day. The show was about survivors of 9/11 and every night we performed I did not leave the stage without goosebumps.

It was a huge honor to act in that show and I hope every actor has an opportunity to feel a performance the way we did. Watching Cirque du Soleil is always inspirational to my husband and I, and it provides a break from the norm, and an escape from reality. Please choose us as your winners!

My 5 year old daughter would tell you that she provides “inspired” performances every day in the car, every night before going to bed, every morning while eating her breakfast . . . I love the songs she sings (the songs are very rarely anything on the radio – instead she likes to make up her own music and lyrics) but sometimes do have to ask her to tone it down a bit because mommy has to think!!!

My wife and I went on a cruise for our honeymoon this past May. While on the cruise we witnessed an inspiring performance. One of the shows covered rock n' roll hits throughout the ages. The performers were truly amazing with great singing and dancing. It was more than I had expected from a cruise line.

At one point the performers came into the aisle and a bunch of elders got up and started to dance. It was truly inspiring to see people relating to this performance. I'm sure it brought back great memories for those guests. It had me thinking how great it would be to come back when my wife and I are in our 80s to reminisce about our life together.

This was a tougher question than I thought it would be! I saw the series awhile back on Cirque du Soleil – it followed the performers as they honed their acts. That was pretty inspiring. But what is standing out in my mind is my kids' gymnastics “show” where they showed off what they had learned in the past few months. My kids are 3 & 4, so there's only so much you expect. But my son has had gross motor delays his whole life and really struggled with some of the components other kids sailed through. I could tell he was a bit nervous that morning as both sets of grandparents were attending, as well as his dad. Despite all of the pressure, he pushed through the entire thing. Not once did he give up, even when he struggled with a particular skill. And at the very end, he was one of just a few kids who was able to pull off a very difficult skill. It's inspiring to see how hard he tries and that his practice had really started to pay off.

My daughter just picked names out the hat and you were one of the winners, but you have no contact information here and your FB profile doesn't allow anyone to contact you either so I have no way of getting you the information except for notifying you here. Hope you see this and get in touch with me please. cc.chapman@gmail.com
