I would also make sure to memorize a few numbers. I have had friends who had a lot of trouble contacting family and friends after a fire because the lost their contacts and cell phone in a fire. This is especially important in a world of unlisted numbers and contact lists that you can get someone on the phone if you need them.

When it comes to our property, what do we expect in case of loss (hurricane, tornado, earthquake, flood, fire, etc.)? The disaster itself is news. What happens after the dust settles is the story: the aftermath shock. With a little curiosity, we can mitigate that shock.

Here's something disaster workers, authorities and the public should know. Insurance policyholders, and more importantly disaster survivors, need to be informed of access to equality--basic rights and information. The internet reaches far more people than anyone would have ever imagined, though difficult to gather those willing to pause, to inspect, to further...to think on their own. And yet, much is available gratis! It just takes looking: www.disasterprepared.net/info.html

Make sure you keep your contact information at your kid(s) school(s) updated. Don't make us beg for accurate information, especially when your poor kid has an abscessed tooth and is crying in pain all day long. (Sorry but I really want to take a clue by 4 up someone's head today).

Know the schools' plans for disasters. (If the building is damaged where do they evacuate to, what id will you need to pick them up.) Don't pitch a fit while we check ID's or record who picked up the children. Do you really want their other parent to panic thinking they are missing or lost? We need a master list with the principal or AP. We have 700 kids to get to safety, we can't remember who picked up everyone without a list.

Great advice, especially regarding having cash on hand and backing up important files. I'd also suggest keeping a large duffel bag packed with the essential discussed above (first aid kit, flashlight w/ batteries, emergency contact list) as well as a list of family medications. That would help speed your evacuation and gives you somewhere to quickly stash the Drobo, cans of food, etc.

Don't forget things like flashlights and batteries too. We hadn't lost power in years and it was pathetic when we were hunting around for those when we did. What are your thoughts on alternative ways to charge things like cell phones or lap tops? A basic generator is also in our plans.
