I got the same advice when I was shopping for my LCD, to avoid Sony because the picture was too black. I also have a friend who swears by Sony and loves his Bravia (it's an earlier generation vs the one you tested). In the end, however, my decision came down to price between a Sony, a Samsung and a Toshiba that, in my opinion, were relatively well matched in terms of picture quality and features. I ended up getting the Toshiba mostly because I got the best deal on it. I like it enough, but wish I had held out on upgrading from plasma until they came out with internet integration. Lastly, you make an excellent point on the wifi issue. When I renovated my home I had it hardwired for surround sound and whole home audio, so my connections are run everywhere, but I didn't think to run ethernet. In retrospect, that would have made sense, but wifi would have been a nice touch and a strong selling point in my mind.
